International initiative «Georgian-Russian civil dialogue» is proud to announce an Essay Competition, oriented towards perception of the conflict in South Ossetia, search for ways of overcoming the conflict’s consequences and evolution of peace in the region.

The following parties are invited to compete: students, postgraduates, professors who major in international relations, sociology, political sciences, history, law, journalism and adjacent disciplines. Civil activists, public figures and cultural workers may also participate in the Competition, giving an input with their reflections on promotion of peace in the region.

We invite you to elaborate on the following aspects:
- analysis of the conflict: causes and conditions of its origin and progress;
- conflict assessment: aspects of international law;
- conflict assessment: new security challenges;
- conflict assessment: role and responsibility of mass-media;
- activities of international organizations and intergovernmental institutions for prevention of the conflict and for the settlement of it;
- institutions of CIS work on prevention and settlement of the conflict;
- peace-building activities in the region;
- civil population in the conflict area: overcoming humanitarian consequences;
- the role of civil society in surmounting the conflict’s consequences and in peacemaking in the region;
- the role of youth in sustaining and overcoming the consequences of the conflict.

The subject of the essay may also be proposed by the author individually, however, it should correspond to the general outlines of the Competition. The work should be done in Russian or English.

The essay should amount to the maximum of 10 pages.

The first deadline for submission of essays is February 08, 2009.

The Competition will last for one year after the present announcement is placed. During the whole period of the Competition, essays denoted by the International experts’ team will be published on the “Georgian-Russian Civil Dialogue” webpage, and also recommended for inclusion into civic and political publications. Participants of the Competition will be invited to participate in international research, educational and cultural programs, will be informed about the work of civil associations directed towards overcoming humanitarian consequences within the conflict area.
