On February 11, 2010, a court hearing will start on the case of Yauheni Yakavenka, who is occused of failure to show up to the military recruitment procedures (Art. 25.1.3 of the Administrative Code of the Republic of Belarus).
Tomorrow, on February 11, 2010, a court hearing is scheduled on the case of Yauheni Yakavenka who is conscientiously objecting to military service and insists on application of alternative civilian service, which goes along with provisions of Art. 57 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus.
Yauheni Yakavenka – a 25 y.o. Gomel resident, an activist of the Belarusian Christian Democrats party – on February 2, 2010 submitted his third application for implementation of alternative civilian service to the city military recruitment office. He also demanded that all notifications for the military be communicated to him in Belarusian language.
On January 14, 2010 Yakavenka was forcedly brought to the recruitment office by people in civilian and militia where he was notified of the possibility of criminal prosecution under Art. 435.1. of the Criminal Code for “evading draft to the military service”. Yauheni refused to sign the notification as it was not communicated to him in Belarusian language.
Last night we found out that Yakavenka will be tried on February 11, 2010 in the Court of the Soviet District of Gomel upon Art 25.1.3 of the Administrative Code of the Republic of Belarus “failure to show up to the military recruitment procedures without objective reasons”.
The hearing is scheduled for 14.30. The case will be considered by Judge Dzinkouskaya Elena.
