Tanya Lokshina is the Russia program director at Human Rights Watch and Honorary Participant of International Youth Human Rights Movement: As the crisis in Ukraine escalated this spring, the Kremlin’s vicious crackdown on civil society also escalated. Space for independent civic activity in Russia is shrinking dramatically, but international policymakers and the media have been understandably too distracted to do much about it. Since early spring, it seems as though every week brings a new pernicious law or legislative proposal.
Earlier this year, the correspondent of Youth Human Rights Movement from Germany Jakob Stürmann interviewed Konstantin Baranov, member of the Coordination Council of the International Youth Human Rights Movement. They discussed so called “law against homosexual propaganda” and the overall situation of LGBT in Russia.

Oleg Sentsov, Olexander Kolchenko, Hennadiy Afanasiev and Oleksiy Chyrniy have been held in Russian jails for two years already under fabricated charges of ‘terrorism’. We consider it being necessary to express solidarity with those who are persecuted due to their pro-Ukrainian views, civic stand and desire for freedom in Russia-annexed Crimea.

«We have a few questions for you,» a border guard told Sinaver Kadyrov, a Crimean Tatar activist, at the Armyansk checkpoint in northern Crimea on Jan. 23. Kadyrov was on his way to Kherson, in southern Ukraine, to fly to Turkey for medical treatment. It was the beginning of an ordeal that ended with a local court expelling him from Crimea, his home of almost 25 years.

The letter from the student trade union "Direct action" on the first results of solidarity campaign

Дата публикации:

In April we were asked by the guys from the student union “Priama dija” (“Direct Action”) ( (Kyiv, Ukraine). As a result of joint efforts of many people, including representatives of the YHRM, ie you and us, the first success of the campaign in support of the union was achieved. Below you'll find a letter from the "Direct action" in which they talk about the present situation, and tell thanks everyone who supported them.

Letter from the student union "Direct action"

As it became known, our campaign has already achieved its first results. Special services of Ukraine have decided not to engage in further development of the conflict concerning the repression against the student union and retreated.
The day before the action, we received a promise from the representative of the SBU that no reprisals against the union and its individual members, their relatives or friends from the side of special services or their agents will not be.

It also became known that the SBU has opened a hotline for complaints about its employees.
We understand that all this wouldn't have happened if we were alone. This international solidarity has given such a result. Without you, comrades, we would have lost.
In addition, your solidarity, participation and attention to this problem did not let us lose heart.
Our campaign does not end there. Adminitsration of the Taras Shevchenko University, it seems, is not going to hear no other language except the language of force. So much the worse for them. Now we are confident of their victory and will not give up.
We, the student of the union "Direct action", express our deep gratitude for your solidarity. You, in turn, could always count on our fraternal hand.
"When we stand united - we are not to defeat!"

Yours fraternally, the student union "Direct action"
