Migration Service where refugees are supposed to come and ask for protection turned out to be a trap, where they are caught on demand of their persecutors. |

On February 17th in Minsk the first criminal trial on the case of participation in the riots at the Independence Square on December 19th took place. According to paragraph 2 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code, the penalty for this deed can range from three to eight years of imprisonment. The trial of the accused Vasily Parfenkov passed in a record quick time – within one day the court considered the evidence, listened to the arguments of the prosecution and defense and awarded a sentence (four years in penal colony). |

The nongovernmental International Steering Committee of the Community of Democracies (ISC/CD) joins with numerous other governmental and non-governmental organizations in condemning the recent electoral process in Belarus, which was full of manipulations and outright fraud and culminated in a brutal police repression of peaceful demonstrators in the central Government Square of Minsk on Sunday evening. Dozens of people protesting the official results of the vote and journalists were severely beaten; more than six hundred were detained, including seven out of ten presidential candidates. Detainees have been treated in a degrading and inhuman way, have been repeatedly beaten in custody, and have had no access to health care, food and water. |
